According to The Telegraph, Manchester United are exploring the possibility of moving for £12.6m-rated Paris Saint-Germain player, Edinson Cavani, in their search for a new centre-forward.
But if Cavani did join the Red Devils, there would be a clear winner and a clear loser coming out of the deal…
Winner: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
Manchester United failed to rattle the inside of the net in their last two Premier League games, losing to both Burnley and Liverpool in the process. Needless to say, without Marcus Rashford, who has already bagged an impressive 19 goals across all competitions in 2019/20, the Red Devils are severely lacking cutting edge in the box.
Quickfire Quiz: How much do you know about Man Utd’s history in the January transfer window?
That was probably the most visible against Burnley when only seven shots out of their 24 were on target and the hosts were definitely missing a big presence in the area to convert the chances. Cavani is a proven and lethal finisher, having already netted 339 goals in his rich career and 198 for Paris Saint-Germain, his current club.
Ole needs a goalscorer and there are not many better than the Uruguayan hitman that are available in the market.
Loser: Anthony Martial
Martial is definitely one of the players that should be stepping up in Rashford’s absence and the 24-year-old forward has recently expressed his desire to focus on becoming a good centre-forward as opposed to being used in the wider areas. So far in the 2019/20 season, Transfermarkt have registered Martial as a left-winger on 19 occasions while he was played as a striker in the remaining ten.
But if Cavani were to be bought, he would definitely be Man United’s centre-forward and that would most likely relegate Martial back to the wings, away from his desired central position. Rashford and Martial have often switched between striker and winger during games this season, but Cavani doesn’t have the profile to take part in such a tactical ploy.
With the Uruguayan’s arrival, the chances of Martial evolving into the Red Devils’ first-choice striker would drastically decrease – for that reason, he would very much be the loser of this reported deal with Paris Saint-Germain.
