da cassino: After being tipped for an England recall last week, James Ward-Prowse only helped his case on Saturday with a ripping free kick against Manchester United. The Southampton midfielder has only represented the Three Lions once at senior level before, despite featuring 31 times for the U21 side, but a flurry of form under Ralph Hasenhuttl suggests he may have finally matured enough to deserve another opportunity.
Football FanCast’s writers give their verdicts below on whether the 24-year-old’s recent form should be rewarded with a call-up for England’s next squad.
Will Jones – No
“I don’t think so. Yes, he’s been good for Southampton recently, and has certainly improved dramatically since the arrival of Hasenhuttl, but he shouldn’t be seriously considered for international involvement yet. The England team is currently in a great place. Gone are the days of handing out caps to any player in a purple patch. In order to break into Gareth Southgate’s side Ward-Prowse must sustain his current form for a significant period.”
Jack Saville – No
“Not for me. There’s no doubt that Ward-Prowse has stepped up under Hasenhuttl, but talk of an England call-up is premature to say the least. Southgate has plenty of superior options to cherry-pick for his next squad.”
James Beavis – Yes
“He deserves it because he has really stepped up his game and added the aggression that was sorely lacking previously. That said, it is also difficult to see him finding a role in this England team. Unless Gareth Southgate is going to pick a formation that incorporates three central midfielders then I am struggling to see where he would fit in, as I don’t believe he could play alongside just one other player in that position.
“Of course, he could potentially be Trippier’s replacement at right wing-back/right-back given he has impressed in that role for Saints in recent weeks too, although Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Trent Alexander-Arnold will have something to say about that.”
Billy Meyers – No
“He’s been in the Premier League for some time now, but has only really started adding some substance to his game in the shape of goals and assists. When the likes of Declan Rice, Sean Longstaff and others have arguably matched, or bettered, his impact over the years in just a season, it’s safe to say that Ward-Prowse should be below a lot of names in the pecking order.”
Christy Malyan – Yes
“Many were bemused when Southgate turned to Jesse Lingard after they’d worked together at U21 level, but he ended up being one of England’s best players at the World Cup. Ward-Prowse is another from that cohort Southgate knows well and he’s probably been waiting for the Southampton midfielder to show enough form to justify a reunion in the senior side. Hasenhuttl’s awoken something in the the 24-year-old, who has always enjoyed immense natural talent, and getting Ward-Prowse involved with England now could see him go up yet another gear.”
